Find ways to go about your day without stressing your joints. An occupational therapist can help you discover ways to do everyday tasks or do your job without putting extra stress on your already painful joint. For instance, a toothbrush with a large grip could make brushing your teeth easier if you have finger osteoarthritis. Surgical and other procedures

Dr. Bartlett's group studied 75 people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and found that those who practiced yoga twice a week in small groups and once a week on their own felt significantly better both mentally and physically. However, she adds, "a good yoga instructor will know how to modify any of the poses for people who have foot, knee, hip, back, or hand arthritis.


You can practice yoga on your own at home, Moonaz says, but it’s best to start with a class, where a teacher can supervise your poses and help ensure that you are doing them correctly. The books and DVDs that are available are good, she says, but they don’t necessarily address the needs of people with arthritis. Look for a yoga studio near you, or try a local YMCA or community center. Many senior centers offer chair yoga. “You can start in the chair and gently work your way into more advanced physical activities,” Bartlett advises.


You don’t want clothes that are too restrictive and don’t allow you to move your body into the correct poses. But you also don’t want clothes that are so loose-fitting that your instructor can’t tell whether you’re doing poses properly.


Ask your instructor whether mats will be provided or you have to bring your own. If you have arthritis, you don’t want to be sitting or lying on an extremely hard surface.


As with any physical activity, it is important that you stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle you can keep near you during class.


Look for a qualified instructor. “As a rule of thumb,” Bartlett says, “it is the more experienced yoga instructors who often teach gentle yoga classes, but it is important that your instructor be well-qualified and experienced and know that you have arthritis and may need to modify some poses or breathing techniques.

Degenerative joint disease affects the cartilage - the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints. Osteoarthritis Treatments Pain Relief


Study on Osteoarthritis as an osteoarthritis treatment, published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research, shows Pycnogenol, an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, reduced osteoarthritis symptoms by 56 percent and provided osteoarthritis pain relief.

According to study results presented at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis, overweight women who followed a 2.5 year diet and exercise program had a significant reduction in the incidence of knee osteoarthritis. The PROOF (Prevention of Knee Osteoarthritis in Overweight Females) study, which was conducted in the Netherlands, set out to assess whether a weight loss program plus oral glucosamine sulfate could prevent knee osteoarthritis. The trial involved 200 women who participated in the weight loss program and 200 women who served as controls and did not participate in the weight loss program. In both groups, half received glucosamine (1,500 mg/day) as well. The women who were selected for the study were 50 to 60 years old, had a body mass index of at least 27, but had no x-ray evidence or clinical signs of osteoarthritis at the study onset.


According to MD Consult, the weight loss program included a weekly group session involving various low-impact sports. The women also had sessions with a dietician. The program was designed to be a regimen that women would stick with. After 2.5 years, researchers determined that among those who complied with the program, there was 25% incidence of knee osteoarthritis among the control group and 10% in the weight loss program group. Researchers did admit that compliance was an issue. Only 25% of women remained compliant with the program. Diet and exercise are lifestyle modifications that require strict commitment. Osteoarthritis occurs as a result of the breakdown of the cartilage in the joints. In a normal joint, the ends of the bones are covered with cartilage: a durable, elastic tissue that protects the bones and allows the joint to move freely. Cartilage gets the oxygen and nutrients it needs by absorbing them, like a sponge, from the joint fluid (called synovial fluid). In osteoarthritis, the cartilage thins out and may even wear away, leaving areas where bones rub directly against each other. As a result, the edges of the bones may thicken and form bony swellings called spurs (medically known as osteophytes). Stiffness and dull pain in the joints, with little or no inflammation, are generally the result. These are the typical symptoms of osteoarthritis.
The weight-bearing joints (hips, knees, and spine) are most frequently involved in osteoarthritis. Other joints often affected are the finger joints closest to the tips of the fingers, which may develop bony knobs. The joint at the base of the thumb and the big-toe joint may also be affected. Osteoarthritis rarely affects the wrists, elbows, shoulders, ankles, or jaw. Although osteoarthritis may affect more than one joint at a time, the disease does not affect other systems or organs of the body.
Osteoarthritis is considered a chronic disease, but it may not necessarily get progressively worse, and many people with the condition are relatively free of symptoms. Few people are severely disabled by the disease.


While a breakdown of the cartilage in the joints is essentially the source of the symptoms of osteoarthritis, it is not always clear why this breakdown occurs. Most often, the thinning of the cartilage is attributed to years of wear and tear and the inability of the body to repair the resulting damage.
Previous injury that causes inflammation in a joint can also make it more likely to be affected by osteoarthritis.
