Separate after 25 years of marriage:Arnold & Maria

Bad movie jokes about Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's separation were easy to find in the feed this morning. When you dedicate your career to outrageous action movies full of clever one-liners, these things tend to happen, so hopefully they're taking the jabs in stride.

Shriver, 55, spoke openly about the uncertainty she felt about moving on to the next phase of her life. "It is so stressful to not know what you're doing next," Shriver said to supporters. Though there was no intimation of a split, Shriver appeared without her wedding ring. "I'd like to hear from other people in transition," Shriver said. "How did you get through it? What were three things that enabled you to get through your transition?"

When he turned to politics in 2003, standing for the governorship as a Republican, Mr Schwarzenegger faced down several allegations of sexual harassment.
In a scandal that became known as "Gropegate" he was accused of having sexually harassed several women over a 25-year period, six of whom came forward with their personal stories.
They included Anna Richardson, a British television presenter, who claimed the star fondled her breast when she interviewed him at the Dorchester hotel in London in 2000.

In recent months he has jetted all over the world, including to France to receive the Legion d'Honneur, and the couple have rarely been seen together.
Their 25th wedding anniversary was on April 26 but they made no public comment.
Miss Shriver appeared in an internet video to supporters in March without her wedding ring. She said: "It is so stressful to not know what you're doing next. I'd like to hear from other people in transition. How did you get through it?

Couple announce their separation in a joint statement: "This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us. After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.

We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives. We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public.
