Tour d'Italie

History

The Tour of Italy ( Giro d'Italia in Italian ) is a competitive cyclist in stages, considered the second largest after the Tour de France . It is created by the Newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport da Eugenio Camillo Costamagna in 1909. The Italian Alfredo Binda , Fausto Coppi and Belgian Eddy Merckx have tied the race record, with five victories each. The 2009 Giro winner is Russian Denis Menchov.
The first Tour of Italy took the start on May 13 1909, the rondeau of Loreto in Milan . The steps numbered 8 for a total of 2448 kilometers.
This is one of the three major cycling tours with the Tour de France and Tour of Spain ( Vuelta ).
Standings and Jerseys current

Maglia Rosa (pink jersey)
The pink jersey is worn by the rider holding the first place overall in the Tour of Italy since 1931. Its color is modeled on the pages of the sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport . Learco Guerra was the first holder of the pink jersey after his victory during the first stage of the Giro d'Italia 1931.
The record of 76 days of racing with the pink jersey is owned by Eddy Merckx.
Cyclamen jersey ( Maglia Ciclamino )
The cyclamen jersey awarded to the winner of the points classification. It appeared in 1966. This ranking is up to the rider who won the most points at the stage finishes, and at the intermediate sprints. Unlike the Tour de France, there is no differentiation between the scoring stages of plains and mountain stages are saying. Thus, it is lawful to see the contenders in the overall wear this jersey.
Each stage finish relates to the first 15 riders 25, 20, 16, 14, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 point.
Each sprint relates to the first 6 riders 8, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point.
The record victory in the rankings comes to Giuseppe Saronni and Francesco Moser , with 4 successes. It should be noted that this jersey was red from the years 1967 and 1969.
The green jersey ( Maglia Verde )

This classification therefore reward the rider who scored more points at the vertices of the trail passes. It appeared in 1933. The leader of this ranking is a green jersey. There are 5 types of passes. Unlike the other Grand Tours , the Giro distinguishes a particular category. Indeed, the top of the competition awards more points than others. It's called the Cima Coppi tribute to the famous Italian champion Fausto Coppi , a former winner of the Tour and Giro . Points are awarded according to the following schedule:
The Cima Coppi (highest point of the Giro ): 20, 15, 10, 6, 4 and 2 points for the first 6 riders
Unclassified Col: 15, 10, 6, 4 and 2 points for the first 6 riders
Pass an e : 10, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point for the first 5 riders
Col 2 e 5, 3 and 1 point for the first 3 riders
Col 3 e : 3, 2 and 1 point for the first 3 riders
The record victory in this classification is for the Italian Gino Bartali with 7 successes.
The white jersey ( Maglia bianca )
It rewards the best young overall.
