Mother's day celebration in Columbus, Ohio

GRANVILLE -- "This is so much fun, because all you're doing is spreading happiness."

Mike Morris, 73, was wearing a white tuxedo with a gray vest and crisp button-down shirt. He made the statement from the entryway of a CVS store on Broadway, where Morris and the other three members of the Sound House Quartet were waiting incognito to give a surprise Mother's Day performance.

Columbus Ill. —
Lindsey Schindler, from Hannibal, will present the music for the 10:30 a.m. Mother’s Day service at Columbus Christian Church in Columbus, Ill. Columbus is approximately seven miles northeast of the Quincy Airport.
Schindler is a recent graduate of Hannibal-LaGrange University with a bachelor of science in communications. Upon graduating, Lindsey hopes to find a job in public relations/marketing and plans to reside in the Hannibal/Quincy area.

I am blessed to have a mom who is special.

She is a woman of will. More than simply headstrong and determined, she is indomitable — someone who cannot become overcome or subdued.

Spunky, determined, funny — all these words describe Jackie Battley Gingrich. Her sparkling blue eyes, upturned mouth and constant activity belie her age. She is helpful, involved, and active.

She has shaped me in many ways. She watched my ballet and band performances for hours, and cheered me on when I was down. She is convinced that I can do anything, and I almost believe it.

Most importantly, she has provided an example to me through her belief in God and her faith in him. She credits prayer, as well as medicine, for saving her life. She has served as a deacon in her church and still volunteers there.

Mother's day celebration in Fort Worth, Texas

Mom is always in his corner, even at the tender age of 100

Anybody who has ever heard of Wayne "Spanky" Lewis knows that he loves basketball.
During our high school days at historic I.M. Terrell in Fort Worth, Spanky was one of the stars, playing on the 1965 state championship team coached by the legendary Robert Hughes.
Most of his adult life he has coached and mentored youngsters, for a long time assisting players at Dunbar High School after Hughes became coach there.
For 14 years he ran a pro-am team and he currently heads MASH (Mentors and Athletes Serving Hope), a basketball program that takes kids all over the United States to play the game.

In case you had forgotten, Mother's Day is this Sunday. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory through 9 a.m. Saturday with low visibility across the Charlotte area and surrounding regions.
Channel 9 meteorologist Katie Virtue said lingering moisture and calm winds allowed a thin layer of low clouds to settle across the Piedmont.

As families across Marshall County celebrate Mother's Day this weekend, area nursing homes and assisted living facilities are honoring those who have served as mothers for many years.
Charlotte Christopher, activities director for Branchwater Village in Boaz, said she feels it is important for families to spend time with their mothers on Mother's Day.

The couple hopes that their dedication to American military families transcends politics and that "Support our Troops" will become an action and not just a slogan. They are working on their first Washington, DC "Stand Up For Heroes" fundraising event in June and will hold their annual New York fundraiser in the fall. A Mother’s Day Stick Shift: What Mom’s Cars Say About Her
Many members of the tribe of the auto-obsessed can trace their compulsion back to parental indoctrination—a sort of vehicular Munchausen-by-proxy, in which the implanted toxin is a father’s fascination with a rusty Austin-Healy 3000 or a mother’s preening affection for all things motorized and Italian. Not so for me—or not exactly. Though my father took me to the Detroit Auto Show every year and patiently indulged my fetish for things be-wheeled, tacky, and baroque, his own vehicles were (and remain) unerringly quotidian.

If you’re wondering what to get your mom this Mother’s Day, there is one gift that is certain to leave a lasting impression: a tattoo for her, on you.

While some children display affection by showering their mothers with flowers, cards and candy, other metro Detroiters have made a bigger, more permanent commitment.

My mother always says, "Once a mother, always a mother."

Growing up, I never really liked the sound of that. I thought it was sort of Bates Motel. What would I want with a mother breathing down my neck when I was an adult? Telling me what she thought about my hair or my outfit. Giving me unsolicited advice about my relationships or my scruples or my religious orientation or my politics. Staying up until I got home at night and yawning the next day from worry and lack of sleep. It sounded like trouble. Wasn't adulthood all about freedom, after all?

Mother's Day Flowers Checked at Border
Boquets Banned Coming Into States
EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection specialists are working the ports of entry right now, looking for flowers.
Actually, they're looking for insects and diseases often found in floral arrangements, which could compromise the agricultural industry here in the states.
Agents have been instructed to examine Mother's Day bouquets, cut flowers and plants bound for the U.S. from south of the border.
Ana Hinojosa, U.S. Customs and Border Protection director of field operations in El Paso, said it's their mission to "stop pests and diseases at the border before they can be spread elsewhere.

After hundreds of submissions, our "Makeover for Mom" winner has been revealed. The contest consisted of a makeover from head to toe, including Botox, teeth whitening and personal training sessions.

Our winner showed off her brand-new look at El Paso Cosmetic Surgery in West El Paso. We talked to nine of her children prior to her reveal.

Talk about a full house! Imagine raising 10 children: 2 biological kids and 8 adopted ones, ranging from five years old to 23! That's what Teresa Martin has done. She serves in the National Guard, so her husband Tim and her daughter, Jordin, a full-time student, also help take care of the children at their West El Paso home.

LAS CRUCES - With Mother's Day celebrations on the calendar in the days ahead, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists working at U.S. ports of entry are busy making sure that flower imports are free from insects, pests and diseases that could harm the agricultural and floral industries of the United States.
"CBP agriculture specialists will be inspecting cut flowers and plants for any sign of insects, pests or diseases," said Ana Hinojosa, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Director of Field Operations in El Paso. "It is an important part of the CBP mission to identify and stop pests and diseases at the border before they can be spread elsewhere.

LAS CRUCES — What could be better than listening to the blues and getting your hands muddy for a good cause?
Mother's Day will be known as "Mudder's Day" at the Phillips Chapel CME Church at 638 N. Tornillo St., for a special fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The chapel, built in 1911, is the oldest African-American church in Las Cruces. It has served as a school and a civic and social center for the Las Cruces African-American community throughout its long history. African-Americans and Hispanics built the original chapel together 100 years ago with adobe walls.

.Mother's day celebration in Boston

ILAC SUNDAY, Boston’s great annual exhale (and inhale!) that marks the height of spring at the Arnold Arboretum, is being held tomorrow — one of the earliest dates ever. Officially it is to coordinate with Mother’s Day, but watchful gardeners know better.
Every year has its own weather character, but the arboretum’s celebrations marking the peak lilac bloom have migrated by three weeks over the last century. In 1920, Lilac Sunday was held on May 30; in 1983 it was May 22; in 2003 it was May 16; and this year it is May 8.Is it global warming? The arboretum is careful not to take a position.

Based on the book Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey, children and their families will retrace the steps of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and their family of eight ducklings during the Duckling Day Parade at the Boston common on Sunday, May 8 at noon. Led by the Harvard University Marching Band, children relive the adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard dressed as one of their favorite characters from the book. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Shaw Memorial in front of the State House. $25 donation per family includes snacks and a toy.

Other than the annual struggle to find a thoughtful gift for the mother of my children, and besides the last minute panic when realizing that all the decent “For my Wife” greeting cards have been bought up by other men who planned ahead, the approach of Mother’s Day is a joyous time. It is, at least in my family.

On occasions like this, I also think about the mothers and their children torn apart by tragedy -- homicide, in particular. I imagine the broken hearts of those mothers whose murdered children will never again buy them a Mother’s Day card, as well as the children of murdered women whose only gift to mom are flowers laid at her grave.

Mothers throughout the United States of America will be honored on Sunday, May 8th, as the nation celebrates the 2011 Mother’s Day holiday. Families will gather together; flowers, cards, and phone calls will arrive from those who are near and far. It is a day that celebrates life and love of family.

The day has been recognized as a national holiday since 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement that Mother’s Day would be held each year on the second Sunday of May.

Ackerman Jewelers, 5335 Ehrlich Road - Forget flowers, say it with baubles. Pandora charmbracelets, necklaces and watches are all sold at this jewelery store. Make your gift even more personal, by shopping for jewelry that contains her birthstone.

Sunday, millions of extraordinary women across the world will be celebrated for the toughest job they’ll ever love — motherhood. There are plenty of fun and unique ways to show mom “the love” from right here in South County.

The traditional breakfast in bed is always popular, where dad and the kids gather together in complete secrecy in the kitchen, insisting that mom sleeps in as they prepare a loving feast of lumpy pancakes and crunchy bacon, and then presenting a drowsy mom with the sweetest tray of love they can conjure up. (This usually includes at least a partial kitchen clean up so that mom doesn’t have to worry about dishes until lunchtime.)

Then there’s the presentation of lots of loving sentiments in the form of card pageantry — pop-up cards, humorous cards, singing cards, mushy cards and best of all, handmade cards that are adorned with glitter, stick figures, rainbows and your child’s sincerest message about how you are the world’s bestest mommy and she’ll love you forever (hang on to this as a reminder that she really does love you during the teenage years).

Many of these jobs are located on the North Coast, where local growers produce irises, lilies, tulips and other bulb flowers. In fact, the largest cut flower farm in the entire country is located in Arcata.

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the special woman who gave birth to and raised us but, sometimes, that is not the same person.

Although things are changing, there was a time when a woman who gave up her newborn for adoption never expected to see her child again. But more and more adults who were adopted are seeking their birth mothers.

PEORIA —
The average person is expected to spend about $140 on moms for Mother's Day, according to the National Retail Federation in Washington, D.C. That could total about $16 billion, a big lift for the nation's retailers.

Expectations are for more expensive Mother's Day gifts, such as clothing, jewelry, and electronic items like smart phones and tablets. We touch base with some central Illinois retailers to assist last-minute shoppers (yes, guys, we're talking about you) looking for gift ideas. But Mom will love whatever you get, you know that.

Last year, Adam Cole decided to write an original song to honor his mom on Mother's Day. Little did the Stanford biology graduate student know, his gift was about to be heard by 100,000 people.

Childbirth can be a deadly matter in the U.S., especially if you are middle or working class. But it was when looking at race and income together that one civil rights organization decided it needed a new lens.

Women in the U.S. living in lowest-income areas are twice as likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth, according to a groundbreaking report released today by Amnesty International. In Amnesty’s one year update to their Deadly Delivery report on maternal health, they showed that the U.S. is one of the most dangerous countries to go give birth in the west, especially if you are poor.

In addition to its legislative work to create racial impacts statements and administering a community garden, The Urban League of Portland is working to create a statewide community health worker program, where Black community members will be trained to support Black pregnant women, in the tradition of a doula.

Because, as Purcell says so clearly, “I believe reproductive justice is part and parcel of civil rights and social justice.”

Leona Vogel will celebrate her 109th birthday on Mother's Day — happy to be blessed by God with another day to help others and bring them cheer.

Vogel likes to sit near the front door in her wheelchair and greet people as they enter Harbor Place at Port St. Lucie, where she has lived since 2007.

When staff members walk by, they make a beeline to hug her and chat for a minute.

Mother's day in Tucson, Arizona

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were an estimated 85.4 million mothers in the United States in 2008. Of that number, 54 percent of 15- to 44-year-old women were mothers. There were also a staggering 4.13 million births registered in the United States in 2009. That's one big bunch of mamas, more than enough to deserve a holiday of their own.

Sunday is my first Mother’s Day without my mom who passed away last June. My sisters and I miss her very much. Some days are bright with her memory and other days we’re reminded of her presence, her cautionary tales and her teaching.

With Mother's Day U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists working at U.S. ports of entry are busy making sure that flower imports are free from insects, pests and diseases that could harm the agricultural and floral industries of the United States.

Agents are reminding border crossers who plan to import flowers and plants from Mexico to advise their florist that the arrangements are destined for U.S. delivery.

Mom’s day is a day for celebrating the women who make the world go round. We owe a lot to mothers like Grandma Moses, Indira Gandhi, Rita Moreno, Rosie O’Donnell, Toni Morrison and Michelle Obama, to just name a few famous moms. But the most important mom is the one we each have.

Though I can’t call my mom on my cell anymore, I am still relishing the times I laughed with her over a crossword puzzle, and enjoyed homemade spaghetti and meatballs with her. Most of all, I remember her smile and the delight she felt her children’s successes like no failing marks on the report card, the first speech and the first trip to camp.

23 Valley Soldiers Arrive Home in Time for Mother's Day
For Sergeant Michael Dinger the words "welcome home" don't even begin to cover it.

"She really has raised one terrific little kid. He's got such a personality," Dinger said, talking about his wife and son.

He's only seen his 13-month-old son, Logan, in person, a couple of times since he was born.

"There's not a minute during the day that you don't think about what he's missing," Sarah Dinger, Michael's wife, said.

It's something Rosa Solis and Erick Magana know all too well.

The Fresno-based husband and wife, both members of the military, had back to back deployments, only seeing each other for about one month in the last two years.

Makes 6, but expand it as far as you want!
6 slices of bacon
6 slices of bread
Shredded cheddar cheese
6 eggs
Salt and pepper
(I) Preheat the oven to 375° F. Grease muffin pan.
(II). Microwave or fry bacon until partially cooked but not crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

(III). Cut out rounds of bread from the center of each bread slice, using a round cookie cutter or the top of a glass. Press the bread rounds into the greased muffin wells.

(IV). Curl a piece of bacon around the periphery of each piece of bread, positioning it between the bread and the muffin tin to help keep it in position.

(V). Sprinkle a small amount of shredded cheese in the center of each piece of bread.

(VI). One at a time, crack an egg into a small bowl or measuring cup, removing about half of the white, and dropping the remaining white and yolk over each piece of bread, being careful not to break the yolks.

(VII). Once all the bread pieces have been topped with eggs, bake until eggs are cooked through to your liking (about 15 minutes depending on how runny or firm you like your eggs) and bacon is crispy.

(VIII). Run a knife around the edge of each muffin well and pop the muffins out. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately.
