Teenager electrocuted on Wirral rail tracks

SIXTEEN-year-old Dale Fleckner died after trying to retrieve a ball from railway line on the Wirral.

It is believed a Merseyrail driver on a train between Rock Ferry and Birkenhead raised the alarm after seeing the boy on the tracks between Rock Ferry and Green Lane railway station at just after 6.15pm yesterday.

Emergency crews were called to the scene.

The boy, who is local to the area and believed to be aged 15 or 16, was treated at the scene and taken to Arrowe Park Hospital by ambulance, where he died.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: "I can sadly confirm that a boy has died following an incident on the railway line between Rock Ferry and Green Lane railway station near Birkenhead early this evening.

"BTP received reports of the incident at 6.15pm and attended the scene along with Merseyside Police and the local ambulance and fire services.

BTP spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

"This incident highlights the very real danger posed by the railway and should act as a warning to others to never trespass onto the tracks.

"We understand that it can be tempting to quickly run across tracks as a shortcut or to try to retrieve possessions, but there is never a good reason for trespassing on the railway."

Dale was a pupil at University Academy South, Birkenhead, which was formerly Rock Ferry High School.
